I'll be in Philly for the AAG. I'm giving a paper in a session on sexuality, space and power

I will be a few days late. What day is your session?

I'm not sure. I haven't checked yet. I'm there for the whole conference and a day or so either side

Have you been to Philly before? I lived there in the early nineties. It is a very interesting city with lots to see. I am thinking of going up to NYC on Saturday. I used to live there too but have not been back since 9/11.

No, I've not been to Philly before. A number of friends have mates living there, though, so I should be put in touch with some interesting locals..

I lived across the Ben Franklin Bridge in NJ. It is good you have some connections there. I was there a year on temporary work and most of my friends were people I worked with. So, I know my way around the city well but don't have any friends living there. Perhaps, I will run into you at the conference.

I LOVE Philly! I went to school about 40 minutes away and always like to get back to the area.

What hotel are ya'll staying at?

I have not made reservations yet. I plan to start looking for a place to stay this afternoon. A friend who was gonna room with me decided to go so I am trying to find an inexpensive place. Any ideas?

I can get a government rate at the Westin. It's a awesome hotel, but I think rather pricey if you can't get a special rate. It's right downstair and a cab ride away from everything.

Decided to stay at the Loews. I am a sucker for older hotels.

I stay at the Lowes whenever I get up to Philly. Its an amazing hotel, with incredible views, and its within spitting distance of market square.

My best friend decided to come with me. I was hoping some tribers would get together but then again this tribe is very new. Anyhow, us geographie tribers should make some sort of an attempt to meet up?

That hotel looks pretty sweet. Very similar to the "W". I might have to change my reservations :)

I'm up for meeting up with anyone because I'm flying solo on this trip. The only people I know are the conference organizers. One of my former professors is the conference chair.

Did you see the ad for the "Birthday Ball" thing... is anyone going to that?

I am not that organized yet! Sounds interesting . . . there always seems to be to much to do and not enough time at the conference.

Here's what I snagged from the website ...

The GAIA GALA—a 100th Birthday Celebration

Join fellow geographers from around the world in celebrating the AAG’s 100th birthday at a once-in-a-life-time ball. The “Gaia Gala,” also known as the “Geography Party of the Century,” will be the premier social event of the Philadelphia meeting. All Centennial Meeting registrants are invited to attend this free extravaganza in the Grand Ballroom in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening, the 16th of March. Hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and a huge birthday cake are included and entertainment will feature a premier dance band, a Mummers band, and many other special activities. Don’t miss it!

I had a run of bad luck on Monday and became very ill. I had to cancel my flight, etc. just a few hours before I was scheduled to leave. Hope you guys are having some great motivations and experiences!
